Ethno USA 2024 Applications are Now Open!

JOIN US IN GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA, FALL 2024

Applications for the 4th edition of Ethno USA are NOW OPEN!

JM International (JMI) and the North Carolina Folk Festival announce their second year of partnership to bring the popular international musical exchange program, Ethno USA, to the North Carolina Folk Festival in Greensboro in September 2024. Ethno has been brought to the US starting 2019, via a partnership between JM International and Folk Alliance International (FAI).

Ethno USA 2024 will welcome approximately 30-40 musicians from around the world (between the ages of 18-30 years old) along with 4-5 artistic mentors for an 11-day residency where the group will create a repertoire of traditional songs from around the world played by a unique ‘Ethnorchestra’, comprising musicians and instrumentation that changes each year, based on recruitment.

Ethno USA will invite back inspiring guest mentor Billy Two Rivers, the local Tuscarora-Lumbee tribe drum keeper. Other traditional international and North American guest mentors who will share their knowledge and music with the musicians at Ethno USA 2024, will also be invited.

Participating musicians will get to experience a vast diversity of musical traditions both from the U.S. and other parts of the world. Around 12 songs will be shared from different countries and cultures. Participants bring with them a song, a tune, or piece of music which they teach to the other participants in workshops during the 11-day residency, creating an exciting repertoire to be performed on stage. All teaching at Ethno is peer-led and collaborative. Besides the formal workshops, there will be plenty of opportunities to share music, cultural traditions and jam with each other.

The residency will culminate in main stage performances at the NC Folk Festival on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday Ethno USA will present a delegation-led showcase  that will showcase traditional, original and newly-arranged songs created during the residency. The main stage performances will be recorded live by master recording engineer and LA-based producer Barry Goldberg.

Prior to the NC Folk Festival performances, Ethno USA will also deliver a community concert and conduct master classes at the local universities and local elementary schools. School children that attend the master classes will be invited to play with Ethno USA on stage!
