Ethno Summer – Estonia 2000

I Attended this Ethno

Ethno Summer Estonia 2000 marked a landmark moment for the project as it officially adopted the name Eesti ETNO (Ethno Estonia) and became part of the international Ethno network. Held in Viljandi, at the heart of Estonia’s folk revival, the camp transitioned from a primarily local initiative into a truly international programme.

Welcoming its first participants from abroad, the 2000 edition solidified the peer-to-peer learning model, with young musicians teaching each other traditional tunes by ear and strengthening the oral transmission of folk music. The residency culminated in a large ensemble performance at the Viljandi Folk Music Festival.

By this stage, Ethno Estonia had become a key educational initiative of the Estonian Traditional Music Center, nurturing a new generation of musicians, including future members of internationally recognized bands such as Trad.Attack! and Curly Strings.
