Ethno Macedonia 2003 marked the inaugural edition of the camp in North Macedonia, expanding the global Ethno network by Jeunesses Musicales International into the Balkans. The event was organized by Jeunesses Musicales Macedonia, the country’s leading organisation for young musicians.
Bringing together participants aged 18–30 from across the Balkans and Scandinavia, the camp fostered intercultural exchange through peer-to-peer learning. Musicians taught each other traditional tunes by ear, with particular interest in the complex asymmetrical rhythms that define Macedonian and Balkan folk music.
As the first Ethno in the country, the 2003 edition laid the foundation for future initiatives and marked an important step in connecting Northern and Southern European folk traditions within the wider Ethno network.
